Dennie Oxley Has Some Explaining To Do

by: finifinito

Fri Jun 26, 2009 at 16:53:44 PM EDT

This just kind of speaks for itself:
A former Democratic Indiana state representative was found apparently intoxicated at a gas station early this morning and avoided arrest by falsely telling police he was a lawmaker serving during the special session, which would grant him immunity.
Police found Dennie Oxley, 38, at the Downtown Citgo in the 400 block of East Ohio Street about 1 a.m. today. According to a police report, he smelled heavily of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and his speech was extremely slurred. He was standing a few feet away from Kristin Dowlut, 21, who was lying face down on the gas station parking lot, apparently unconscious.

Classy
According to the police report, a witness who works at the gas station told police he saw a taxi cab drop off Oxley and Dowlut and later noticed Dowlut on the ground but didn't know how she got there. The gas station attendant said he went outside to try to help the female and tried to get Oxley to help her, but Oxley responded that he was not going to touch her.
Dowlut was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital. Police did not arrest Oxley, according to the report, because of immunity during the General Assembly session.

[smacks forehead] I think I am having a Maalox Moment. Why is this law still on the books? This is such a bad law, it creates a class of citizens above the law!

And what the hell was Dennie Oxley thinking? This story raises more questions than it answers. Who was the girl? What were they doing that resulted in her falling unconscious face down into the pavement? I pray that Oxley gets whatever help he needs to deal with whatever life situation he finds himself in because there is clearly a problem that needs addressing.

Reminder: Knocktoberfest is Tomorrow!

by: finifinito

Fri Oct 17, 2008 at 11:55:28 AM EDT

I just wanted to remind everyone of the Knocktoberfest event tomorrow, here are the details!
Well, here we are, 23 18 days until the 2008 election, and we're happy to note that Jill is running neck and neck with Mitch Daniels - in spite of his enormous corporate funded war chest, TV advertising blitz, and big green yard signs.  This success speaks to the tremendous grassroots support that continues to grow every day for Jill.  What I'm asking you today is if you will step-up and help Jill cross that finish line first!
We need your assistance in talking to voters who have yet to decide who they will be voting for on Election Day.  Any and all hours you can spare on the phones or walking door-to-door and talking to these voters will make the difference on whether we get the kind of change Jill will bring to Indiana, or four more years of the same with Mitch.
We're at our offices at 804 N. Delaware Street, seven days a week.
Monday-Friday - 9:00 am to 9:00 pm
Saturday - 9:00 am to 8:00 pm
Sunday - 10:00 am to 9:00 pm
Please give me a call or e-mail to let me know when you want to come in and help us get this job done.  I don't have to outline the changes that are needed in Indiana, but what I do want to impress upon you, is that we can't bring about those changes without your help.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.  See the attached flyer about an unprecedented event coming up next weekend.  Thank you.

Knocktoberfest!

by: finifinito

Sun Oct 12, 2008 at 12:43:17 PM EDT

I got this in an email from some friends at the JLT campaign (thanks David and Daniel!) and I wanted you all to be aware of this next weekend. The JLT campaign has been busy organizing with the Obama field offices and other candidates down the ticket across Indiana for an event they are calling Knocktoberfest which will run next weekend on Saturday and Sunday. The goal is to knock on 100,000 doors across the state next weekend in the biggest volunteer push ever organized by the Indiana Democratic Party. Here is the email I received from Naeemah Jackson, JLT's Field Coordinator:

Bumpity bump!

by: finifinito

Thu Oct 09, 2008 at 20:08:11 PM EDT

A friend sent some pictures to me and I just had to share. This series of pictures is a perfect example of the personal style differences between Obama and McCain. Obama is just the cooler candidate, and this discreet moment onstage yesterday caught by a supporter in the crowd (thanks Robynn!) captures the moment succinctly.

Obama approaches a veteran seated in the front row of the stage:

Howey: Look over there! *LOUD NOISES*

by: Hank Scorpio

Fri Oct 03, 2008 at 09:21:02 AM EDT

You knew this was coming; he just couldn't bear the thought that Indiana doesn't properly love Mitch.  Much as he did with the Selzer poll, Brian decided to discount the Research 2000 poll because it didn't include "top line" info; info like who sponsored the poll, and how was the question phrased.

Does it matter?  Sure, if you're dealing with a polling firm that has no, or a questionable, track record; but Howey himself discounts that with his own words from last week:

The next Indiana independent media poll expected will be the Research 2000 which polls for WISH-TV, WSBT-TV and the South Bend Tribune. If it mirrors Selzer, it could signal a new trend. Hopefully, these media entities will publish toplines and key demographic information.

What we have is a respected polling firm with a good reputation; maybe not the best, but not a firm that is openly questioned for bias.  An independent media polls have no reason to introduce bias; they make a living based on their reputations, and to be consistently wrong (which partisan polls almost always are) is a blow to their bottom line.

The real question here is why Howey is so determined to destroy the credibility of any poll that makes Mitch look bad?  For a guy who has worked to earn a reputation as being unbiased; he sure does live to carry Mitch's water.  At best he's just a fanboy who thrives on his relationship with Mitch; at worst he's a hack with an agenda.  Actually there isn't much of a difference there now that I think about it.

Obama 43 - McCain 45 in Indiana; Daniels still leads

by: BrianK

Thu Sep 04, 2008 at 17:51:31 PM EDT

(Bumped from the user diaries. I've questioned the Howey-Gauge polls in the past, but my politically astute gut instinct tells me these are probably pretty close. Thoughts? - promoted by Thomas)

The latest poll numbers in Indiana are out - according to a just-released Howey-Gauge poll, Hoosiers are evenly divided in their support for John McCain and Barack Obama:

Hoosiers are likely to find themselves at the American political epicenter over the next 60 days as the latest Howey-Gauge Poll shows Republican John McCain with a 45-43 percent lead over Democrat Barack Obama

It doesn't look like they've released the full crosstabs, but the article has a lot more information to dig through, with some interesting implications for Barack Obama and his upcoming visit to Indiana.

Now, for the bad news:

Mitch Daniels - 53
Jill Long Thompson - 35

Again, I haven't had time to delve into these numbers at all, but this is bad news for a poll this late in the season:

In the gubernatorial race, Democrat Jill Long Thompson faces a dilemma similar to what she faced in the primary. Her total awareness stood at 77 percent, up from 41 percent in February and 59 percent in April. While that number increased, her favs and unfavs both increased 10 percent from 22/9 in April to 32/19 in August.

Also, it appears that Mitch is edging toward that magic "50" on the re-elect question. I'll have more on this later.
