Evan Bayh's popularity hovers around all-time high

by: Thomas

Thu Apr 30, 2009 at 14:36:15 PM EDT

For all of the folks that have been raising false alarms over Sen. Evan Bayh's political strength as we head toward the 2010 election cycle, may I direct your attention to these numbers, courtesy of the WashPo's Chris Cillizza:
A new poll conducted by Dave Beattie (of Hamilton Campaigns) for Sen. Evan Bayh suggests little reason for concern as the Indiana Democrat looks toward a race for third term in 2010. Nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of Indiana voters see Bayh in a favorable light while just 23 percent view him unfavorably. Bayh's favorability ratings are high across party lines with 74 percent of Independents and 61 percent of Republicans viewing him in a positive light. Republicans made some noise about challenging Bayh earlier this year but that talk has largely faded amid glowing poll numbers (like these) and the Democratic incumbent's massive campaign warchest ($11.4 million on hand at the end of March).
Sen. Dick Lugar had almost identical numbers to Bayh, showing both are as popular as ever among Hoosier voters.

Oh, and President Barack Obama appears to have emerged unscathed from the "tea bagging" he received a few weeks ago -- he still enjoys favorable feelings from 61% of those questioned.

I'm lol (1.80 / 5)
Not at the right, but at the left.  Actually, both.  They're dumbasses: on both sides.  May I suggest to Howard, FishersDem, DA, et al, that you take your pointless crybabying over to HoosierAccess and bitch with those bozos rather than polluting this site?

Just a suggestion.

The ones left can speculate as to whether or not Indiana Republicans will even bother to run a candidate against one of the state's most popular leaders.

ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010

Of course (4.00 / 1)
With his republican voting record and weak support of Obama,  he has very high support with republicans and conservative independents....I have never said I thought he would lose,   I have just said that he has lost his way as a Democrat.....the more he bashes Obama and fails to support him, the more he will become popular with republicans.   He is no  BIRCH BAYH.  Interestingly,  they did not include his favorability rating with Democrats.  Pretty soon he will have ratings up there with Danny Burton and Mike Pence.

[ Parent ]
I got the numbers yesterday, Howard -- (4.00 / 1)
Here's the first thing I took note of: (89% / 8%).

Those are the fav/unfav numbers among self-identified Hoosier Democrats.

He's not lacking for Democratic support in this state, dude.

:) (2.00 / 3)
I'm sure you'll find plenty of agreement if you take that to DailyKos, but among people who can actually vote for the man, not so much.

It seems Bayh has managed to find some consensus between the two parties here at home.  I seem to remember Obama saying something about that all throughout the campaign, but did he say it was a good thing... or a bad thing?  Can't remember.  Oh well.

PS.  Like I've said before, you could also, if you wanted, lay off Bayh for a bit and take comfort in the fact that he hasn't actually done anything to thwart the Obama agenda.  There hasn't actually been and "bashing", Howard, except of Evan Bayh by crazed liberals.

Uprating this because I like a good healthy debate... (4.00 / 2)
...not because I necessarily want anyone running over to crazyland.

[ Parent ]
Who sounds like the radical right ring now? (0.00 / 0)
They're the ones who are happy to see Specter go.  You, apparrently, would be happy to see those Democrats on this site you disagree with go.

And you claim to be the reasonable one.

I should also mention (4.00 / 3)
I'm very impressed with Obama's numbers in our state.  I still can't believe he carried our state, but I'm very proud that he did, regardless of the margin.

ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010

He'll be back next month... (4.00 / 3)
...raising money for our congressional delegation. I think he realizes that keeping Indiana on the electoral board will be as important three years from now as it was last year.

[ Parent ]
eternal hope (4.00 / 1)
I hope he is raising for Democrats and that you are correct.  Please post on here when he is raising money for a Democrat other than himself.

The rumor mill has been churning for a while -- (4.00 / 1)
Shella talked about it earlier today: http://blogs.wishtv.com/2009/0...

[ Parent ]
I don't think that any of us who are critical of Bayh... (4.00 / 2)
...have said that he wasn't popular in the state so I don't see how this justifies bashing members of the site.

George W. Bush once had a high popularity rating.  Doesn't mean his policies were the right ones.

... (0.00 / 0)
Those of you who are critical of him paint him as out of the Democratic mainstream, as Republican-lite, etc.  But as Thomas mentioned, Bayh's approval among Dems in the state is almost 90%.  He must be doing something right.

[ Parent ]
oh yeah... (0.00 / 0)
Specter's approval among PA Republicans before he jumped ship was in the 30% range.

Not sure how this relates. (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
Here's how it relates... (0.00 / 0)
Several of you have been calling Bayh a Republican and suggesting that he join the other party.  Specter had many similar criticisms on Republican blogs, but those criticisms were backed up by polling data showing that real people, not just those of us in the online world, didn't think Specter was Republican enough.

I'm happy with Bayh, and while I sometimes wish he would vote a different way I understand that I voted for a moderate Democrat.

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
Moderate? (4.00 / 2)
I could understand and live with Evan Bayh if he were a moderate.  This is Indiana.   I think he has crossed the line from moderate to conservative and that I find unacceptable.  Yes, Mario, remind me that he has unbelievable  poll numbers and will be re elected easily.  I concede that.  I just wish he would be more supportive of Obama.

[ Parent ]
Bayh=Conservative? (4.00 / 1)
According to Congressional Quarterly, in 2008 Bayh voted with the Democrats 65% of the time, making him the "least loyal" Democrat.  That means he voted against the official leadership position on 35% of votes.

What's a good percentage of party unity for a red-state Democrat?

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
Red state (0.00 / 0)
With a divided state legislature, a majority of the US House members being Democrats, and the state voting for a Democrat for President, I would challenge the assumption that this is a reliably red state any longer, but will probably be a swing state for a while.

[ Parent ]
One election does not a trend make... (4.00 / 1)
With the exception of Evan Bayh and the narrow victory of Obama, no Democrat has won statewide since Frank O'Bannon won reelection in 2000.

The Republican majority in the Indiana State Senate is strong.  The Democratic majority in the Indiana House is razor-thin.  More Hoosiers voted for Republican legislative candidates than voted for Democratic candidates (as Bosma whined on and on about).

In the past 45 years, a Democratic presidential candidate carried Indiana only once.  The Cook Partisan Index rates Indiana at R+5, meaning that Indiana is about 5 points more Republican than the national average.

I'll wait another cycle or two before I prognosticate on whether Indiana is a true swing state, or whether this President was just able to tap a vein.

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
I don't think I've ever said I wish Bayh would switch parties. (4.00 / 2)
I wish he'd vote more in line with the Democratic Party, though.  ;)

"It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority."  --Benjamin Franklin

[ Parent ]
No... (0.00 / 0)
but you and others have called him a Republican more than once.

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
I can't sleep... (4.00 / 1)
...so I did a search of my comments using the terms "Bayh" and "Republican".  The closest I've come to calling Bayh a Republican is calling him a "supposed Democrat" after he voted for a right-wing sponsored amendment to the stimulus package banning any funds from said package going to ACORN.  This, despite the fact that ACORN was not going to receive any funds from the stimulus package.

As an aside, has anybody heard from Blue State Blues?  I haven't seem him post in a while.  I hope he's just busy, but I worry about "regulars" when I don't see them post in a while.  :)

...nationally.  For Indiana, obviously not.

[ Parent ]
With such astonishing poll numbers... (4.00 / 2)
...why does Bayh feel the need to vote against the Democratic agenda.  Seems like he has some political capital to spend.  Why is he hording it?

"It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority."  --Benjamin Franklin

Yes, even Democratic authority.

??? (0.00 / 0)
The poll numbers suggest that Bayh is doing everything exactly right.  So why would he change?  Further, he's always been a fiscal conservative.  Maybe he voted against the budget not out of political expediancy but becuase he truly didn't want to vote for such astronomical deficit spending.

ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010

[ Parent ]
Maybe I remember 1988-1996... (4.00 / 2)
..Differently then others, but he was pretty conservative then.  If anything he's been more moderate overall as a Senator.

I think the wing of the party in Indiana who thinks Bayh, Donnelly, and Ellsworth are too conservative need to actually step outside of the major population centers and try talking to Democrats in the rural areas.   I think they'd find pretty quickly that those three are to the left of many of the rural Democrats in this state.  Actually, I know that's what they'd find; I experience it every day.

[ Parent ]
Good point! (0.00 / 0)
Most of Bayh's critics come from Indianapolis or the smattering of college/industrial towns in the state.  I don't know of any rural Democrats on this board.  Carson doesn't have to worry about rural Dems, and Pete has enough base in Lake that he doesn't have to, either.  But anyone who looks at a map of the 8th and 9th CDs notices that they are huge with few significant cities in them.

While rural voters voted for Obama more than they voted for Kerry, they did not vote for Obama overall.

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
I approve of Bayh (0.00 / 0)
But there are things he does I disagree with - overall i'd be in the 90% of democrats who support him.
